Choose Your Swimming Pool Builder

Who will build your swimming pool?  How will you select a quality reliable swimming pool builder?  Following are some guidelines and suggestions to help you select your swimming pool designer and swimming pool builder.

Standing the test of time
When making your decision on the company that will fulfill your backyard dream build and install or update your swimming pool or spa, carefully look at the company’s history. Ask yourself, will the pool and the company stand the test of time?

Do they use the finest quality installation techniques and equipment available? Do they have the financial strength and capacity to give you peace of mind in knowing  your installer will still be in business if your swimming pool needs maintenance?

Is It A Local Swimming Pool Company, a Branch or Franchise? Be sure your pool builder is a locally owned company.  Branches and  franchised owned often come and go.  You want to know they stand behind every swimming pool and warranty. Ask questions about their financial stability.  How long have they been in business?  Do they have any of their own crews?  Do they own their own equipment and vehicles?  Are they in their own building?

Can you see samples of pools they have built on display or do you have to inconvenience one of their customers to view the company's construction, work and options?

Do they have their own service department or do they subcontract it out?

You will want to drive to and physically go in their business office.  Many new builders or those with cash flow problems may work out of their house or truck!

More established swimming pool builders will own their own building and may have a pool display of in ground swimming pools.  This gives you the opportunity to see their work.  You can see features and benefits and take away the guessing of what it will look like.

You can touch the surfaces and see the color in real life! You can see and hear the water features, you can put your feet in the swimming pools to feel the surface on your feet....

What is the Swimming Pool Builder's Record? Ask around, who do you know that has had their pool built by the company you are considering?  How was the experience?  Were they timely?  Has their pool met their expectations?

Contact the Better Business Bureau in your area.  Check them out.

More important, get their contractor’s license number and check with your local Registrar of Contractors for any complaints.

In Arizona, that phone number is 602-542-1525.

If you are in  Arizona check out your contractor by name or license number online here:

During Swimming Pool Construction

Who will be your contact person?  The sales/designer or a construction coordinator and superintendent?  Your best situation is all three!

A good salesperson should be available if any issues come up during construction.

Coordinators schedule all the work and are in constant contact with your field superintendent and inspection agencies.  Most sales people can’t stay on top of construction details and work with new clients and do a good job in both areas.

Your superintendent will be in your backyard checking the construction of the pool and will often be supervising the different trades.

How Long Will Your Swimming Pool Construction Take?

What is the expected time from the time you write the contract to start the swimming pool construction?  What is the expected time of construction from the time the dig is complete to the day water is in the pool?

Most swimming pool builders have shorter construction windows from August through January.

From February through July, you should count on one to three weeks longer window.

Verify this with other homeowners who have had a pool built by the same company to see how long it took to build their swimming pool and how long their swimming pool sat with no work being done.

After Swimming Pool Construction

Ask if your pool builder does any follow up for feedback when the pool is completed.

This lets you know they care that they did the job right and lets them know what areas to improve in their process.

Every good company is built through referrals from satisfied customers and because of their reputation for high-quality work.  If you are referred to a pool builder be sure to work with the same sales/designer.  Ask if they have any loyal customers whom they have built more than one swimming pool or someone who consistently refers them.

Warranty
Be sure you understand the warranties.  There are a lot of smoke and mirrors out there with “LIFETIME” warranties.  Many of these have fine print with deductibles and other nuances.  Understand what “lifetime” means.

The warranty should cover the pool structure, filter tank, heater and other integral components.  Pool builders with strong reputations and outstanding records in the swimming pool industry will have programs with the industry’s top-quality equipment manufacturers.

They are often able to offer extended warranties beyond that of other pool builders.

These premier builders have the first in leading edge technologies too.

Some areas of the country or even areas of a community may have extreme soil conditions that can cause structural issues.  Ask your sales/designer if there are any extenuating conditions in your area.  See if they do anything special in construction to address the problem for a more successful swimming pool.
