Landscape Design - Patio Rooms, Decks and Terraces

Your patio, deck or terrace is the transition space or area that generally adjoins the house to the landscape.  It is more of an out door living room- your patio room.  It may be elevated, flat on the ground, squared off or curved, open to the sky or covered.

There may be stone covered pillars. Wood pillars with vines growing up over a trellis or pillars of the same material and color of the house.

Because it is adjacent to the house, the patio or terrace should look as if it belongs there.  Plan your design so it is an extension of your interior and integrate with the building materials on the exterior of your home.

Your garden floor begins the moment your feet hit the patio surface. Does it integrate with the floor surface inside in color or material?  How will it flow to the other outdoor room surfaces as you plan your overall landscape design?

Chances are you have a natural concrete deck.  This large gray area likely in no way integrates with your interior.  There are many materials that can cover this surface and be used in other landscape areas.

When selecting your flooring it is important to visually break up a large mass with pattern.  If you have an Arcadia or French doors centered on the patio, for instance, you can create a pattern in the middle, perhaps with colorful tiles.

If you are laying a stone and brick path, you may want to repeat the same design in a larger scale on your patio, deck or terrace. The bigger the patio, the bigger the pattern.

Concrete patios and paths will look more interesting if has been scored with lines (also known as expansions joints) to give it pattern and dimension.  Stamped colored concrete creates a very handsome look and can overlay existing concrete. (A good concrete professional can do this).

Brick, flagstone and tile are also good cover ups - you can do these projects yourself.  Pavestone is easy and clean to install too.

Concrete in a color that flows with the interior flooring is a good looking economical solution.  To soften, add stone or brick borders.

Another good solution is to tie the design of your swimming pool with your patio by using the same material you use on your swimming pool deck on your patio.  There is a whole section on swimming pool design here!

If it is the acrylic kool deck material, be careful of  large areas of a single color with no pattern.  Expansion joints can create a complementary design and break up the expanse of the single color surface.

The acrylic kool deck material is not a natural material and can be applied in different textures and faux designs.

Use a border on patios and hard surface decks or create focal point designs.  When using natural stone or tile in your landscape design don’t try to mix the Faux stone look and the natural stone.

It compromises the look and expense of the natural stone.  The two surfaces will age differently.  The natural stone will have a nice patina as it weathers.  The faux material will fade with weather.

You may live in an area where porches can be added on to your house.  To help you get started on your design try the Punch software.
