Zany Chest with Tubing and Bead Pulls
Do you have an out dated or not my style dresser or chest? Would you like to make it new and zany just for your décor in your style? Great!
Get out the jig saw and palm sander....... Grab some paint and found copper tubing........... We are going to transform this "Early American" dresser into something else!
Supplies and tools you need:
A dresser or Chest
Your Jig Saw (notice the base!)
Your palm sander Photo 089 here
Power drill/screw driver
Acrylic paint in colors you like (The small 2 oz craft paint works great)
3/8 " Copper Tubing for drawer pulls Enough for eight to ten inch lengths for each drawer pull. (This one used 70 inches)
Copper wire 20 or 22 gauge
Miscellaneous beads
Two screws and nuts to hold drawer pulls

Let's get started!
Get out your jig saw and palm sander....... Grab some paint and found copper tubing........... We are going to transform this "Early American" dresser into something else!
Lay the dresser on it's back.
Mark the new zany design you want to cut on the base of your chest.
Cut it with your hand jig saw. Sand your cuts.
While the chest is on its back sand the front surfaces so your paint will adhere. Take the drawers out so you can get the wood pieces between the drawers.
Remove the drawer pulls. Sand the drawer fronts.
Set the dresser back upright. Sand the top and sides.
Clean with a damp tee shirt, then tack cloth and rub with a large square of brown paper bag. You are ready to paint.
Paint base coat. This zany piece has a dark gray acrylic over all.
The top:
Red acrylic paint marker was used to paint the zigzag design. Metallic copper was painted on the inside of the zigzag design over the dark gray. Then silver metallic acrylic painted over the copper.
Before the silver dried (work quickly) a tooth pick was drug in two to three inch lines at different angles so the copper would show through. You will have a dark gray zigzag border.
Leave the base front and top drawer front dark gray.

The sides and front frame: Metallic copper was painted over the dark gray. Then silver metallic acrylic painted over the copper. Before the silver dried (work quickly) a tooth pick was drug in two to three inch lines at different angles so the copper would show through. Like the top.
The two large drawer fronts: The carved edge all the way around each drawer was left dark gray framing the drawer. On the inside of the frame, the large rectangle of the drawer front paint with the metallic copper over the dark gray. Then silver over the copper. Make the lines with the toothpicks. They should look like the sides and the top.

Now, lets funk it up! Squeeze a small puddle of your silver metallic paint on your pallet. Take the end of your large paint brush. Dip it into the puddle of paint. Then barely touch the dark gray area on the border of the top. You have a dot! You can get two or three dots per dip into the paint.
Dot all the dark gray areas.
Drawer pulls are the big accessory. Grab some 3/8 flexible copper tubing. (There may be some left over from your ice maker installation or pick it up at the home center). Cut the tubing into 8 inch lengths.
Hammer it flat. Shape the ends into a curl toward you with a curve in the center for the pull. The transition between the center curve and the end curls is where you will attach the pulls to the drawer fronts.
Mark where the screw holes should be with a marker. Make the holes with an ice pick. Dab each of the screw heads with copper metallic paint. Screw the drawer pulls on the drawer fronts using a nut to hold them on the inside.

The final zany touch! Just before each screw is tight, take one to three medium size beads strung on copper wire and wind them around the screw head. Tighten the screw holding the pull and beads in place.
Voila! Your own zany, styley piece of furniture! Enjoy!
