Hang a Picture, Picture Hooks and Nail Holes by Vickie Morrow

How do you hang a picture, picture groupings and arrangements of pictures with picture hangers and hooks without leaving lots of little nail holes? It is pretty simple.  Here's how:

Have you ever hung a picture on the wall, then a year later taken the picture off the wall and been shocked at the three little nail holes around the picture hook or hanger?

To hang the picture you tapped the nail in a little too high, then too far to the left and just below where the picture hook needed to go.  Now what?

Tap a nail in the wall and hang a picture.  That may be all
you need to do. When you have several pictures to hang and want to do an arrangement of pictures it may be more complicated than one picture hook in the wall.

Treat your entire arrangement of pictures as one piece of art.  Symmetry is good, but remember asymmetry can add interest. to your picture grouping as well.  Try to keep the distance  between picture frames relatively consistent and the art pieces or picture frames no more than a couple inches apart.

Be SURE the arrangement of pictures is at or near eye level from where it will be viewed most of the time.  Hang a picture at standing eye level when in a hall or passage way.  Hang your pictures at sitting eye level in the living or dining room.  You don't want to have to crane your neck to see your pictures or art from the sofa!

Hang an arrangement of pictures with the center of the picture grouping at eye level.

There are a variety of picture hangers and picture hooks.  3M has a stick-on hook with an easy release patch that holds the picture hook to the wall. It's a fast and an easy way to hang a picture without leaving a mark on the wall when you take it down.

Look at Dick Blick Art Materials for an extensive selection of picture hangers, picture hooks,  easels, art and picture stands.

When you are using a nail to hand your picture, you may want to hide the hole later.  On a wallpapered wall, cut a very small V shape in the paper. Gently pull the paper back, drive your picture hanger or hook into the wall and hang the picture frame or art. When you take down the picture, pull the nail and then reglue the wall paper V back in place. Voila. no damage!

Hide your nail holes on a painted wall by mixing patching compound  or even a little quick set with matching wall paint, then cover and plug the picture hanger or hook hole.

To get the picture hanger in the right spot use a template.  (This
works much better than trying to hang a picture in the right spot
and putting three to five nail holes in the wall until you get it
where you want it)!

How many times have I done that?  And I know better.......

Make your template from a piece of paper cut the same size as
your picture frame.  Mark the vertical center of the template.  Mark where the center of the wire hanger is on the template.  Cut a small hole where the mark is so you can transfer the mark to the wall with a pencil.

When you do an arrangement of pictures, make templates for each one of your picture frames and arrange them like you want your picture grouping on the floor.

Then transfer the arrangement of pictures to the wall. Use masking tape to hold the templates in place on the wall. Stand back and be sure you like the picture grouping.  When you are satisfied, mark for the picture hangers or hooks as described above to hang each picture..

Use a level if you are hanging pictures in a row or are using
two picture hooks for one picture.

When hanging your art, pictures, or arrangement of pictures avoid direct sunlight, heat sources and areas with high humidity so you won't have fading or damage.
